Welcome to your newborn session prep guide! Please review the guide before your newborn session to help you get prepared and have an amazing session. We're so excited for it!

Tips & Guidelines

Outfits & Props

Outfits
  • Plan 1 to 3 outfits for your session and set aside an extra or 2 if you’re unsure. Plan outfits for
  • everyone in your family as well as your newborn. Think about outfits and colors that go well together and go well
  • with your home and the nursery. Comfy, cozy, and simple are the way to go for in-home newborn sessions. Light
  • and neutral colors add brightness and softness but add some color if it fits for your family, your style, and your
  • home. Consider soft textures and knits. Avoid clothing that is very formal, very athletic, or worn out. Avoid very bold and bright patterns or clothing with large logos or characters.

Accessories
  • Consider the details and accessories. Set aside hats, headbands, hair clips, shoes, and booties.

Details
  • Don’t forget the little details. Get fresh hair cuts for your session (it might be best to do these the couple weeks before baby’s due date rather than the first week baby is home).
  • Make sure nail polish is not chipped and nails are nicely shaped.
  • Plan hair styles and makeup that are comfortable and won’t require too much effort.
  • Make sure outfits fit your newborn and booties fit as well, nothing too loose or big.

Props
  • Set aside any props you’d like to include in your session such as keepsakes, stuffies, simple toys, rattles, binkies, loveys, etc.
  • Set aside a few blankets, wraps, and swaddles to use in photos.
  • Set aside a few baskets from around your home to be used as props.
  • Pull out and have ready a clean pile of towels and washcloths to use under blankets to prop baby up for posing.
  • Look around your home and baby’s nursery for items that might look great in photos!
  • We  will bring a few baskets and wraps but love using your items as they reflect you and your family.

First Outfit
  • Have everyone in their first outfit and ready before the start of your session. For baby you can plan to change them when I arrive if that seems best.

Preparing

  • Stimulate and keep your newborn awake for an hour or so before your session.
  • Feed your newborn right before your session. This helps make baby extra sleepy for the session.
  • Make sure nobody is hungry during your session, plan to eat before your session and to not be waiting for it to be over to have a meal.
  • Set aside a light and easy snack just in case.
  • We can take breaks to change baby, feed baby, and keep baby happy, we can photograph during these moments too.
  • We can do photos in the nursery, living room, master bedroom, and any space that is open and has clean backgrounds. Try to declutter and have ready areas we will photograph in as much as possible. But we understand how the first week home can be so don’t stress, we will make it work and move things around as needed.
  • Get excited for your session, we’re going to have fun!
